Washington (4-5)
The matchup with the Warriors is big for the Trojans; West and Washington have competed in close matches the last two years, with Washington knocking West out of the 2023 state tournament and West beating Washington last year in the state third-place matchup. Additionally, Head Coach Nina Marquardt coached for the Warriors for two years before coaching for West this year. However, after a series of close matches, West ultimately fell to Washington 4-5.
In singles, Sophie Singh ’27 and Marie Stier ’25, who usually start at 3 and 5 Singles, respectively, were absent, meaning many members had to step up to higher positions. Angela Kim ’28 and Momo Shinozaki ’27 stepped up to play 5 and 6 singles, but ultimately fell short. Shortly after, Sasha Postnikov ’25 won her match at 1 Singles 6-1, 6-2. Grace Wang ’27 played a tough match at 3 Singles, but fell 4-6, 3-6. Elsie Gross ’27 made a strong comeback in the second set, but lost in a close 5-7 score. A hard-fought 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-8) win by Iris Vasi ’28 held West in the meet going into doubles 2-4.
Going into doubles, West needed to sweep all three doubles matches to win the meet. At 3 Doubles, Gross/Claire Hahn ’25 at 3 Doubles came through in their match, winning with a quick 6-3, 6-0 score. West’s 2 Doubles of Vasi/Wang finished shortly after with a 6-4, 6-1 win. Postnikov/Stier had a slow start, losing the first set 3-6, but came back strong in the second set with a 6-1 win. Their momentum wasn’t enough, however, as 1 Doubles lost the match in a 5-10 third-set tiebreak.

West will return to their home courts May 12 to compete in the individual regional competition. Each region is comprised of six schools that each submit two singles entries and two doubles entries into the tournament. The tournament itself is single elimination, with the top two in both singles and doubles qualifying for the girls individual state tournament, which will take place at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex May 30-31. Last year, the girls tennis team sent two entries (Maggie Shin ’24 in singles, and Hahn/Stier in doubles). This year, West submitted Gross and Singh for singles and submitted Postnikov/Stier and Wang/Vasi in doubles. The girls will compete against entries from Burlington, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, City High, Davenport North and Dubuque Hempstead.
