Five Trojan wrestlers moved onto the  tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on February 16-18. See how the wrestlers fared during each session below.

Session 1: Thursday Feb. 16 9am

 

106: Hans vonRabenau ’18 won 11 – 9 over Thomas Edwards ’20 (Johnston) in the first round. 

120: Alex Aguirre ’17 lost to Cam Shaver ’18 (Cedar Rapids Kennedy) by a 1-4 decision. Aguirre moved to the back side of the bracket and beat Cal Baethke ’19 (Urabndale) in a 6-4 decision. 

152: Nelson Brands ’18 got a 28-13 tech fall over Elliot Pohlmeyer ’18 (Johnston) in four minutes. 

160: Carter Rohweder ’17 won a 18-1 tech fall over Alex Blizard ’19 (Bettendorf).

220: Guy Snow `18 was defeated by Drake Leek ’18 (Norwalk) in a 3-5 decision. Snow went to the back side of the bracket and was pinned in 49 seconds by Carter Sergeant ’18 (Pleasant Valley).

At the end of Session I, West has vonRabenau, Brands and Rohweder on the championship side of the bracket and will wrestle in the quarterfinals at Session 4 at 9am on Friday, Feb. 17. Aguirre will wrestle in the second round of consolations following the quarterfinals. Snow has been eliminated.

Session 4: Friday Feb. 17 9am

Championship quarterfinals and second round of consolation brackets.

106: Hans vonRabenau ’18 loses to Ben Monroe (Ankeny Centennial) by a 20-5 tech fall. VonRabenau then came back with a 4:45 fall over Anthony Humpal (Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson) in the second round of consolations.

120: Alex Aguirre ’17 wins a 10-3 match over Anthony Watts (Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson) in the second round of consolations.

152: Nelson Brands ’18 wins by fall over Shawn Brown (Des Moines Lincoln) in the quarters to move into the semifinal round. 

160: Carter Rohweder ’17 wins a 4-3 match against Collin Hushagen (Johnston) to move into the semifinal round Friday afternoon.

Session 5: Friday Feb. 17 2:30pm

Championship semifinals and third round of consolations.

106: Hans vonRabenau ’18 loses to Evan Yant (Waverly- Shell Rock) in the third round of consolations. Hans will wrestle for seventh Saturday morning against Nathan Kahoe (Des Moines Lincoln).

120: Alex Aguirre ’17 loses to Joe Pins (Dubuque Hempstead) by a 0-15 tech fall in the third round of consolations. Aguirre will wrestle for seventh Saturday morning against Connor Sexton (Indianola).

152: Nelson Brands ’18 wins a close, 7-6, match against Austin Yant (Waverly-Shell Rock) in the semis. Brands will wrestle in the finals on Saturday night. Last year, Brands won the 3A 138 pound title.

160: Carter Rohweder ’17 loses to Joel Shapiro (West Des Moines Valley) in a 0-7 match in the semis. Rohweder will wrestle Saturday morning; if he wins this match he will wrestle for third place, and if he loses he will wrestle for fifth place. Last year Rohweder placed seventh.

At the end of Session 5, West has vonRabenau and Aguirre wrestling for seventh and Rohweder wrestling in the fourth round of consolations Saturday morning, and Brands wrestling in the state finals Saturday night. 

Session 7: Saturday Feb. 18 10am

Placement matches for places 3-8.

106: Hans vonRabenau ’18 loses a 3-7 decision to Nathan Kahoe (Des Moines Lincoln), placing 8th.

120: Alex Aguirre ’17 loses a 1-4 finals, Carter Rohweder ’17 loses to Zack Wagenhoffer (Waverly-Shell Rock) in a 3-10 decision. Rohweder went on to win a 7-2 decision over Alex Streicher (Linn-Mar) to place 5th.

Session 8: Saturday Feb. 18 6pm

Iowa High School State Wrestling Championship Finals.

152: Nelson Brands ’18 wins his second 3A State Championship, beating Cayde Lara (Fort Dodge), 11-9.

The team placed 12th overall.
