West qualifies 29 entries at Drake Relays
The Drake Relays will take place April 25 to April 28 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. Read on for the West High qualifiers.
Both the girls and boys track teams competed at the Forwald/Coleman Relays at City High School on Thursday, April 19 in a last effort to qualify for the Drake Relays. The Trojans won with 160.5 points, lead by Austin West ’18, a University of Iowa track signee, who won each of his four events. The Women of Troy finished as the runner-up to 2017 4A state champion Waukee, who bested West by a 53.5-point margin.
As the Drake Relays qualification deadline came and went, student-athletes with the top marks in 16 events were eligible to enter the Drake Relays. The number of entries for each event ranges from 16 in the 800-meter run and 400-meter hurdles to 80 in the 4×100-meter relay. Athletes are also not separated based on class as they are at the state championships.

West High – 4×100-meter relay, 4×200-meter relay, 4×400-meter relay, 4×800-meter relay, distance medley relay

Chandler Haight ’18 – shot put, discus throw
Deniz Ince ’19 – 800-meter run, 1500-meter run, 3000-meter run
Bailey Nock ’18 – 800-meter run, 1500-meter run, 3000-meter run
Katie Severt ’19 – long jump
Peyton Steva ’19 – 100-meter hurdles
West High – 4×100-meter relay, 4×100-meter shuttle hurdle relay, 4×800-meter relay
