Track teams compete at state championships

On Thursday May 18, Friday May 19 and Saturday May 20 the boys and girls track and field teams took on state.

Deniz Ince ’19 congratulates Claire Ronnebaum ’17 after her leg in the girls 4×800 meter relay. The team placed 10th with a time of 9:45.76.

The girls track and field team placed second overall at the track and field state championships that took place May 18-20, losing to Waukee. Individual state champions included Valerie Welch ’17 who won the long jump, the distance medley relay and the 100 meter hurdles. Welch also placed third in the 400 meter hurdles. Bailey Nock ’18 also ran a leg of the winning distance medley team. Nock won the 3,000 meter run and the 1,500 meter run. Along with winning 3 events she placed fourth in the 800 meter run.

The boys track and field team placed 9th. Kolby Greiner ’19, Austin West ’18 and Jared Sams-Merriwether ’19 all placed highly for the team. Greiner took third place in the 3,200 meter run and seventh in the 1,600 meter run. Sams-Merriwether took home a fourth place medal in the boys high jump, where he jumped 6-02. West got second in the 400 meter hurdles, sixth in the 4×400 meter relay, sixth in the 800 meter sprint medley relay and tenth  in the distance medley relay.

The boys team also competed in the State Pentathlon.  It was held in Pella on May 22nd. The boys team took 1st place with outstanding performances by West who placed first and Cole Mabry ’19 who placed seventh overall.
