After the first Speak Up, Speak Out event at Wetherby Park on June 3, Iowa City Mayors Bruce Teague and Pro Tem Mazahir Salih and Johnson County Supervisor Royceann Porter hosted the second Speak Up, Speak Out event at the Pheasant Ridge Community Center on June 5.
Attendees and neighborhood families gathered for the event to listen and share their personal experiences and opinions about racial issues.
“Speak out. Speak your heart. Let people know how you feel, don’t hold that anger in, because when you hold it in, it’s worse. Let it go. So we have been able to tell how we feel. We have been able to hear people, listen to people, and that’s why we’re out here tonight,” Porter said at the event.
The event concluded with Mayor Teague singing “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers.
The final Speak Up, Speak Out event will be held at Mercer Park at 2:00 P.M. on June 6.
