During third period at 11:19 a.m., the power went down at West High. Students, however, remained inside their third period classrooms. The internet went out at 11:33 a.m. For lunch, students were dismissed by floor level. Students on the top floor went to A lunch, middle floor went to B lunch and bottom floor to C lunch. Fourth period had been called off for the day to reset the flow of the day and allow all students to have lunch. Students will then resume with the normal schedule starting fifth period.

According to Principal Mitch Gross, the power outage was caused by a MidAmerican Energy outage. Nearly 6,682 MidAmerican Energy customers were affected in the Iowa City area from the power outage. The power came back at 11:58 a.m., followed by the internet coming back at 12:04 a.m.
