Artist of the month: Adeline Lasswell ’24

In this month’s installment of Artist of the month, WSS talks to Adeline Lasswell ’24 about their artistic journey.

Katherine Shoppa, Print Co-Editor-In-Chief

WSS: When did you start drawing?

Adeline Lasswell (they/them): So in fifth grade, I was drawing in my notebook and I came up with this way to draw people where [I made] a circle and their head and I thought it was the coolest [thing]. I was like, ‘Oh my god, I could make things.’

WSS: Were there any influential people who inspired you with art?

AL: [There] was this forum thread where you could find people and message and talk about art with. So I went on there just because I was like, ‘Oh, cool. I might find some people to talk to.’ Somehow this really good artist messaged me … and we shared our art with each other. This was when I was in sixth or seventh grade … He made this nice little example sheet of how to do [anatomy]. And I was just like, ‘Wow, thank you.’

WSS: Do you have a favorite mode of drawing?

AL: See, I’d say digital, painting specifically. But for things like sketches and doodles, I prefer traditional just because it’s easier to get stuff out faster. And I’m used to drawing digitally but even then traditional still feels a bit more natural

WSS: Why did you join art club?

AL: I actually just started doing art club just because I wanted to just hang around there and see what it’s like and just like hanging out with people and stuff.

WSS: Do you have a favorite thing about art club?

AL: I think that for any hobby … it’s sometimes easy to get distracted … but I think having a specific time and place where you can just focus specifically on art. I think that’s good for kind of getting in the zone of it.

WSS: What about drawing brings you the most joy?

AL: It’s just kind of a relaxing, fulfilling thing. There’s also this satisfaction of being able to see yourself in print because you can visually see your improvements. I have a big folder that has all of my art files from years ago and, and I’ll go back through sometimes [and] it’s just like ‘well I used to not be so good, huh?’ I think that’s a nice feeling, for sure.
