Pride month, a month to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots and the LGBTQIA+ community, is coming up this June. This month is an opportunity to recognize the influence that this community has had historically, locally, nationally, and internationally. Parades, parties and all forms of celebration take place during this prideful month. Swirls of color—red, blue, green, yellow, brown, black, purple and more—are a vision of the celebration.
Colors Club, a club that welcomes LGBTQIA+ members and allies, holds meetings each Wednesday in Kerri Barnhouse’s room from 4:15 to 5:00. These meetings include activities of discussing LGBTQIA+ issues or just finding a place of community with like-minded people.
Pride month is an opportunity to celebrate one’s identity. “I really enjoy just going all out in rainbow gear,” said Abigail Van Every ’26. Other members are looking forward to creating pieces in celebration of Pride month. “I want to do lots of Pride themed art,” said Caroline Vander Weg ’26. Other members choose to visit organizations that assist in LGBTQIA+ services. “I want to visit UAY [United Action for Youth] at least once,” said Andy Ham ‘24. Additionally Andy likes to delve into LGBTQIA+ related media. “[During Pride month] I always try to find some sort of queer media.”
These are not the only ways to celebrate. Listen to the podcast below to hear the other responses from the Colors Club members.
