Trojan girls wrestling team falls to Liberty
The JV portion of the meet kicked off at 6:15 p.m., with both teams looking to gain momentum at the start of the season.
The night started out with Lila Bihun ’27 at 110 pounds. She was pinned by her opponent in the first period.
Up next was Michaela Vogel ’28 at 130 pounds. The match started out with Vogel getting taken down by her opponent, Jamie Johnson, followed by a reversal from Vogel. Going into the second period, Vogel took the top position and Johnson managed to escape before getting pinned with 2.3 seconds left in the period.
One of the most exciting matches of the night was Acasia Lukalaba-Ndomba of Liberty vs Eli Morden ’28 wrestling for West. Lukalaba-Ndomba got a takedown 20 seconds into the first period, followed by a reversal by Morden. Going into the second period, Lukalaba-Ndomba chose neutral and Morden got a takedown, putting the score at 6-7 then getting another four points after tilting her opponent to get back points. Morden chose the top position going into the third period and pinned her opponent with 1:16 left in the match.
After Morden’s match, there were two exhibition matches where West wrestlers competed against each other. The matchups were Kaylee Hampton ’28 vs Sophia Stalkfleet ’28, where Stalkfleet prevailed by fall, and Bihun vs Ellie Mozena ’28, and Bihun won by fall as well.
Moving into the varsity meet at 7 p.m. West faced challenges in the lighter weight classes, with no wrestlers competing at 100 or 105 pounds. Meanwhile, Liberty did not send out a wrestler at 105 and secured six team points when their 100-pound wrestler accepted a default win.
This early lead gave Liberty the upper hand, setting the tone for the rest of the meet.
The first match wrestled in varsity featured Liberty’s Naoni Davisson against West High’s Jersey Naughton ’28. Davisson secured the victory, pinning Naughton in the first period to extend Liberty’s lead.
Xuvia Stevenson ’25 represented West High at 115 pounds in an intense match. The two began with aggressive hand fighting, as both wrestlers battled to take control and set up their attacks. Despite Stevenson’s efforts, she was pinned with 4.2 seconds remaining in the first period, securing another key victory for Liberty.
Maza Musa ’25 represented West High at 120 pounds, taking on Mia Ungs from Liberty in a competitive match. Musa started strong, securing a takedown with 1:41 left in the first period to score two points. However, Ungs responded with a reversal, tying the score. The momentum shifted in Ungs’ favor, and she ultimately pinned Musa with 38.4 seconds remaining in the first period
In the 125-pound category, Noah Overholt ’28 represented West and wrestled against Liberty’s Michaela Thigpen. Overholt started out strong and won by fall with 1:01 remaining in the first period, earning six points for West.
Trinity Myers ’25 faced off against Kaitlyn Raue from Liberty at 130 pounds. The match was tied in the second period with a score of 3-3. Myers was able to get back points to put the score at 5-3.
In the third period, Raue escaped and followed up with a takedown, shifting the score to 7-5 in her favor.
Natalia Gentiluomo ’25 went head-to-head with Liberty’s Elyse Caviel in a competitive match. Heading into the third period, the score was 1-3 in favor of Caviel. Despite a strong effort, Geniliumo was unable to close the gap and ultimately lost by fall.
Not originally planning to wrestle, Harper Chase ’25 stepped in for Sylvia Broffit ’26, who moved up a weight class. Chase faced her opponent from Liberty but was unable to secure a victory. Despite a strong start, she lost by fall in the first period.
Sylvia Broffitt ’26 wrestled Callum Wu of Liberty at 145 pounds. Broffitt was wrestling up a weight from her typical 140 this match. She got put on her back in the first period and was down 7-0 going into the second.
Wu chose the top position and Broffitt escaped with 1:25 left in the period. She chose the top position going into the third with a score of 7-1. Broffitt managed to put Wu on her back and get a four-point near fall, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Wu’s lead and she ended up losing 7-5.
Eva Jara ’28 took the default win in the 170-pound weight class as Liberty did not have any wrestlers to compete. This gave West High an additional six points.
In the 190-point weight class, Emerson Reimers ’28 went up against Emma Sanders.
In the first period, Reimers got a takedown followed by a reversal from Sanders. The score was 5-2 Jara going into the second period. The match ended with a pin from Reimers, giving West six team points putting the score at 18-48.
The night ended with Deanna Varela ’27 vs Abigail Carr. After a few takedowns and reversals, the score was 7-2 going into the third peiod, with Varela taking the top position. Varela prevailed, winning by fall with 10.4 seconds left in the match.
