Fans and teams alike entered the 2024 Formula 1 season expecting a repeat of the year before: a year dominated by Red Bull and Max Verstappen. To be fair, this was looking to be the case at the beginning of the season. However, as the season progressed, Red Bull fell under threat in both the World Drivers’ Championship and the World Constructors’ Championship.
Lando Norris kept Verstappen on his toes after his maiden win in Miami. Norris often qualified alongside Verstappen on the starting grid or even ahead. In standout races like Zandvoort and Singapore, Norris started and finished on pole with a large margin to Verstappen. But despite these victories, Norris lacked consistency.
Like Verstappen, Norris earned eight pole positions this year. However, he could only convert three to wins, often losing the lead in the first lap. Because of this, Verstappen continued to extend his lead in the Drivers’ Championship and ultimately finished ahead of Norris by 63 points.
Although Verstappen’s efforts were enough to keep the Drivers’ Championship alive, they weren’t enough to advance Red Bull in the Constructors’ Championship, as that required the help of his teammate, Sergio Perez. However, Perez faced a notable dip in performance following the Miami Grand Prix. He went from consistent podium finishes to getting knocked out before the third qualifying session.
Red Bull officially lost their first-place position in the Constructors’ Championship to McLaren after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Perez lost out on a podium finish following a collision with Carlos Sainz. His continued lack of performance, combined with Ferrari’s victories in the American triple-header, dropped Red Bull down the order a second time, ending the season in third.
While the battle for first place in the Constructors’ Championship raged on at the front, a thrilling battle for sixth was underway in the midfield. Under treacherous conditions, the Brazilian Grand Prix brought an unexpected duo to the podium. Alpine drivers Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly earned a season-best finish, P2 and P3, respectively. This moved Alpine up to sixth in the Constructors’ Championship, succeeding Haas. Haas fought back at the Las Vegas Grand Prix and reclaimed the position; however, they dropped back down to seventh after being outperformed by Alpine at the Qatar Grandprix.
For the rest of the midfield, 2024 was a season to forget. When Williams replaced Logan Sargeant mid-season with Franco Colapinto, the Argentine made a memorable debut, scoring points alongside teammate Alex Albon in his second-ever F1 race. However, this high quickly turned into despair, with both drivers suffering several crashes in the last races of the season. Although Aston Martin scored points consistently enough to finish the Constructors’ Championship in fifth, they struggled to find pace the entire season.
Kick Sauber ended a disappointing season by finishing tenth in the Constructors,’ with their only points coming from Zhou Guanyu in Qatar. Since Visa Cash App RB replaced Daniel Ricciardo with Liam Lawson, the team showed pace in qualifying sessions but continued to struggle during races. Their efforts led them to finish eighth in the Constructors,’ not far behind Haas.
