West hosted the individual regional tournament May 12. Each region is comprised of six schools that submit two singles entries and two doubles entries to individual state. The tournament itself is single elimination, with the top two in both singles and doubles qualifying for the girls individual state tournament, which will take place at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex May 30-31. Last year, the girls tennis team qualified two entries for individual state (Maggie Shin ’24 in singles, and Hahn/Stier in doubles).
This year, West submitted Elsie Gross ’27 and Sophie Singh ’27 for singles and submitted Sasha Postnikov ’25/Marie Stier ’25 and Grace Wang ’27/Iris Vasi ’28 in doubles. The girls competed against entries from Burlington, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, City High and Dubuque Hempstead. Davenport North was part of the region, but did not enter any athletes into the tournament.
In singles, Singh took the #4 seed, allowing her a bye for the first round of the tournament. Gross, who was unseeded, began the tournament with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win against Jefferson’s Kylie Schrader, followed by a 6-2, 6-0 upset against the regional #2 seed, Amelia Wolfe. Singh defeated Dubuque Hempstead’s Scarlet Misag Becker 6-3, 6-1 in the second round, but fell to Lily Holland, last year’s state runner-up, in the third round. For her third match of the day, Gross played Noor Kassas from Dubuque Hempstead, and after a hard-fought match, fell 3-6, 1-6. Singh and Gross played in the third place consolation match, with Singh winning 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles, West secured the top two seeds, with Postnikov/Stier taking #1 and Vasi/Wang at #2. Vasi and Wang started off strong with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Jefferson, while Postnikov and Stier won their first round 6-2, 6-0. In the second round, the doubles pairs competed against Dubuque Hempstead, with a long, three-set match for Wang/Vasi, who ultimately fell short of the win 4-6, 6-2, 5-7.
Postnikov and Stier secured a clean sweep 6-0, 6-0 match against their Dubuque Hempstead opponents. In the finals, Postnikov/Stier faced off against Hempstead’s Claire Kelley and Mya Hoden, whom they beat 6-3, 6-3 in the regular season. The matchup proved victorious for West, with a 6-1, 6-1 win by Postnikov/Stier. Vasi/Wang defeated their opponents 6-4, 6-0 in the consolation final to win third place.

Additionally, the team celebrated Senior Night after the tournament’s completion. This year, girls tennis recognized four seniors — Claire Hahn, Gianna Liu, Postnikov and Stier — with gifts like flowers, photos and stuffed animals.
West will host team regionals May 20, where they will play the winner of City High/Ottumwa at 9am. The winner of the matchup will then play for the regional title and state qualifier.
