West High’s junior varsity and varsity show choirs, Showtime and Good Time Company, performed at Liberty High the evening of Jan. 7 for the annual district-wide Choirs for a Cause performance. Ticket proceeds from the event were donated to the American Cancer Society. The concert was West’s third of the year after Works In Progress in the fall and the Winter Swing Show in December.
City High’s groups opened the show with JV company Charisma’s theme “Be Our Guest” and varsity choir 4th Avenue Jazz Company’s theme “Heartlines.” After the first two sets, West prepared to take the stage.
Showtime started with their theme “Level Up.” They introduced the program with “Choose Your Fighter,” solo by Mieka Hedt ’28, and “Pokémon Theme” with a solo by Isaac Nelson ’29 before moving to “Blood on the Dance Floor,” featuring soloist Stellah Verry ’29. The group closed with “Speed Me Up” / “Digital World,” including solos by Camden Vaughn ’29 and Mar Nourski ’29.
GTC performed the theme “Minecraft” next, embodying the creative spirit and featuring songs from “A Minecraft Movie” and the video game “Minecraft.” They began with “Build It Up” / “I Feel Alive” with solos by Emma Lai ’28 and Eva Ortega Lopez ’26. Next was “Mambo No. 5” / “Steve’s Lava Chicken” / “Another One Bites the Dust” / “Tubthumping,” featuring “Minecraft” crafting and a dramatic lava chicken-caused fall by Carter Birch Houchins-Witt ’26. The choir then sang “Sweden” / “Sound of Silence” / “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark” before transitioning into “Don’t Turn Out The Lights” / “Thriller,” soloists Carter Wagner ’28 and Derick Doresca ’26. GTC finished with “Brand New Day” / “Just Playin’” / “I Play,” highlighting soloist Thaniel Rent ’28.
Liberty High’s two show choirs, JV Impact and varsity Storm, closed the night with performances themed around Texas and New York. GTC and Showtime are now preparing to showcase their themes “Minecraft” and “Level Up” at upcoming local competitions, and both show choirs’ next concert will be the Spring Swing Show at West High on March 1.
