Have you ever taken a bite into what you thought was a sweet, chocolatey Oreo but it turned out to be a minty toothpaste mess? You have been pranked. The list of pranks is practically endless when it comes to April Fools’. This includes replacing sugar with salt or putting a fake rubber spider on someone’s shoulder. Everyone knows April Fools’ Day as the holiday where you can get revenge, play pranks, and get pranked yourself. However, there is more than what meets the eye when it comes to this holiday.
April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582 in the country known for its amazing croissants: France. During that year, France transitioned its calendar from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar. Some people had not realized the change or the news had been delayed and had continued to celebrate the “new year” during the last week of March through April 1 instead of Jan. 1. These people had become the butt of the jokes and the foolish holiday has stuck ever since.
