The West High football team traveled across town to Bates Field to take on the City High Little Hawks. The Trojans had some fantastic plays, but in the end, they couldn’t get it done, losing 23-8.
The Little Hawks got the ball first, starting off strong, marching their way to the West five-yard line. However, a loss of five and a stop by the defense forced a turnover on downs.
West had an incomplete pass, but Jack Wallace ’25 turned it around with a pass to the 36-yard line to Izaiah Loveless ‘24. The offense couldn’t get much going after that, so Evan Anderson ’25 booted a 40-yard punt.
City had a few big plays down the field, but penalties made them settle for a field goal with 3:54 left in the first quarter. West got the ball back, but the Little Hawks intercepted it just a few plays into the drive. City High reached the red zone, attempting to convert a fourth-and-five with a double pass play, but Santana Miller ’24 got his hands in the face of the second passer, getting the ball back on downs.
The teams went back and forth, but City scored a touchdown (though missed the PAT) with six minutes left in the half. West couldn’t get it going before the break and faced a 9-point deficit.
West got the ball to start the second half, but after penalties and a sack, they had to punt it back to the Little Hawks. City didn’t last long though as Mason Goering ’26 got an interception.
The teams battled it out for the rest of the half, but City got the best of West, scoring two touchdowns while getting a fumble and interception, though Wallace hit tight end Nick Caylor ’25 for a touchdown. Miller ran into the end zone for the 2-point conversion.
The turnovers were the difference in the Battle of the Boot, and West lost 23-8. Catch them at home Sept. 22 for the homecoming game against Ankeny.
