Trojans basketball dominates against Liberty in double-header

The girls and boys team traveled to Xtream Arena on Dec. 10 to compete against Liberty High.

Girls basketball

The Trojan Fight Song fills the air at Xtream Arena on Dec. 10 at 5 p.m. Filled with a pep band, Hector the mascot, cheerleaders, baton twirlers, parents, students and coaches, the girls and boys varsity basketball team walk onto the court to face Liberty in the first double header of the season. 

Liberty led the first twelve minutes to end the first quarter 6-12. However, by the end of the second quarter, West girls turned the score to 24-18, stalling Liberty from getting more than six points, with freshman Sasha Baldwin and sophomore Grace Fincham scoring the last points before half-time. 

Sophomore Ava Frese, senior Lucy Wolf and Fincham scored points to continue their lead of 36-31 to end the third quarter. Wolf began the fourth quarter with scoring while Liberty began to catch up by scoring four points to bring the score 38-37. Frese, Wolf and Baldwin score crucial points before running out the clock in a 50-42 win for the Trojans. 

The girls will travel to Wahlert Catholic on Dec. 12, 7:30 pm. and will also travel to battle Linn-Mar on the court Dec. 15 at 6 pm.

Boys basketball

The West High boys varsity team walk onto the court, watching the girls finish with a win. They are set to start at 6:30 pm, walking on with two wins and zero losses and Liberty having one win and one loss to begin. 

The game begins with two points from Jack McCaffery ’25, and with four minutes to go in the first quarter, Kareem Earl ’24, Jacob Koch ’24 and McCaffery score to bring West up to 8-5. The first quarter ends with 13-10 points respectively. 

During the second quarter Mason Goering ’26, Earl and Koch scored points to bring the score to 23-24 with three minutes left in the quarter. The second quarter ends 31-28 with a slam dunk from McCaffery. 

West continued on their streak to finish the third quarter with 56-38, and then went on to lead the fourth quarter to a win of 74-53. The West boys stayed undefeated with three wins and zero losses. This week they battle Dubuque Wahlert at home in the main gym and at 7:30 pm on Dec. 12 and on Dec. 15 they travel to Linn-Mar for a 7:30 pm game against the Lions.
