Girls basketball dominates in substate quarterfinal

The girls’ basketball team defeated Des Moines Roosevelt 72-57 on Saturday night.

Nate Frese’s team took the West high court for the last time this season on Saturday night, as they faced off against the Riders from Des Moines Roosevelt in their first substate game. Beginning their road to the Wells Fargo Arena. 

The Trojans came to win against the Riders as they scored 5-points in the first 3 minutes. Not letting up their defense. 2-free throws made by  sophomore Olivia Bailey to put the Riders on the board.

Senior Meena Tate was a powerhouse last night and had 13 points scored before the first half was over, sinking a 3-pointer to propel them into the second-quarter

The energy from their continued and the Riders could not control this West high squad. Keiko Ono-Fullard ’23 had a 3-pointer and Grace Fincham ’26 had 2 3-pointers, furthering the gap between these 2 teams in this all-or-nothing game that will send the winning team to the next round of substate matches.

The Trojans walked into the locker room with a 45-21 lead, the Riders needing to make up 24 points to stay in the game.

The Trojans came out of the locker room with the same intensity and had no plans of slowing down. Ending the night with a 72-57 win over this young Des Moines Roosevelt team.

West will continue on in the tournament and Face off at Dowling Catholic on Tuesday night for a chance to go to Wells Fargo Arena once again.
