Following the last meeting where West High Film Club showed “Grave of the Fireflies,” Film Club has opened up to requests from members for specific movies to be shown. Some possibilities include:
“La La Land” (2016)
Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone come together as Sebastian and Mia, a jazz musician and actress navigating Los Angeles as starving artists’ with a dream to succeed. An incredible film that can boast its cinematography, music, choreography and acting, “La La Land” is a strong contender for a movie showing.
“Casablanca” (1943)
Possibly one of the most famous and critically acclaimed historical films of all time, “Casablanca” follows an American café owner in Casablanca, Morocco during World War II as his past lover confronts him and has to decide between helping her escape the Nazis or not. Starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman as Rick Blaine and Ilsa, this romance/war movie will have you on the edge of your seat one moment and laughing at the clever jokes the next.
“Rope” (1948)
An Alfred Hitchcock film, “Rope” is based on the 1929 play by the same name. Following Phillip Morgan as Farley Granger, Brandon Shaw as John Dall, Joan Chandler as Janet Walker and James Stewart as Rupert Cadell, the cast meshes together to present this crime/thriller film to the best of their capabilities. The film goes through the murder of Janet Walker’s fiancé and the dinner party that follows.
“Kubo and the Two Strings” (2016)
From the same producers as “Coraline” and “Paranorman,” “Kubo and the Two Strings” is an animated triumph that is a stop-motion fantasy following a young boy named Kubo after he accidentally summons vengeful spirits with a vendetta against him and his mother. Kubo, voiced by Art Parkinson, goes on a journey accompanied by Monkey, voiced by Charlize Theron and Beetle, voiced by Matthew McConaughey, as he fights gods and monsters to reach his mother and understand his father’s past. With unique characters and an incredibly detailed world, “Kubo and the Two Strings” is a very interesting film.
Meeting every other Friday in room 128 or the Little Theater, Film Club is looking forward to all the different movie possibilities to round off the year with.
