West track and field qualify nine relays and 23 individuals for state

The track and field teams ran at the state qualifying meet at Iowa City High School on May 9.

On May 9, the girls and boys track and field teams traveled across town to compete at rival Iowa City High in the state qualifying meet. The girls qualified for 12 total individuals and events and the boys qualified for 20 total individuals and events. The boys took the relay title with 203 points and the girls took third with 105 points.

Girls

The girls auto-qualified in nine events, with three relays and six individual events respectively. The shuttle hurdle team of Erinn Varga ’24, Jaylin Herring ’26, Eriniah Carter ’24 and Sophia Olivio ’25 placed first with a time of 1:05.29. The 1600 medley relay team stacked their roster with Natalie Steva ’25 and Herring running the 200-meter leg, Varga running the 400-meter leg and Kate Van Waning ’26 splitting a 2:23 800-meter time. The 4×400-meter team of Eva Willis ’26, Sophia Austen ’27, Varga and Herring edged out City High to get second with 4:08.54. Austen and Carter also qualified in the high jump and 100-meter hurdles. Hannah Longmire ’26 took home four first place finishes and auto-qualifications in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash and 800-meter dash in the ambulatory events. The girls also qualified by time in the 400-meter hurdles with Erinn Varga ’24, the shot put with Helen Penning ’24 and Sophia Olivio ’25 in the 100-meter hurdles.

Shot put: 4th place 38-10.75 (Helen Penning ’24)

Discus: 7th place 103-00 (Penning)

4×200-meter relay: 4th place 1:49.68 (Steva, Stewart, Cornish, Austen)

4×400-meter relay: 2nd place 4:08.54 (Eva Willis ’26, Austen, Varga, Herring)

4×800-meter relay: 5th place 10:19.01 (Evans, Cindy Wang ’24, Gabby Moniza ’24, Hannah Geng ’27)

800 medley relay: 7th place 1:58.00 (Lily McConnell ’25, Stewart, Willis, Frank)

1600 medley relay: 2nd place 4:20.42 (Steva, Herring, Varga, Van Waning)

4×100-meter shuttle hurdle relay: 1st place 1:05.29 (Varga, Herring, Carter, Olivio)

Boys

The boys auto-qualified in an impressive 16 events with five relays and 11 individual events. The team of Todd Rent ’24, Mason Woods ’25, Julian Manson ’26 and Izaiah Loveless ’24 qualified in the 4×100-meter and 4×200-meter relay. The teams for the 800 medley relay (Rent, Woods, Manson, Moustafa Tiea ’25), the 1600 medley relay (Rent, Woods, Brice Wahe ’25, Sam Showers ’25) and the shuttle hurdle relay (Aidan Jacobsen ’24, Cade Towler ’27, Waleed Ibrahim ’26, Ely Smock ’26) also all qualified. Loveless also placed first to qualify for the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Jacobsen qualified in the 400-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles, while Tiea qualified in the 400-meter dash, 800-meter dash and 1600-meter run. Showers followed Tiea to place second in the 800-meter dash as well. Ibrahim takes second place in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles, while Colin Whitters ’26 rounds out their qualifiers by taking first and second in the shot put and discus. The boys also qualified by time in the 4×800-meter relay (Showers, Michael Lee ’24, Maxwell Bruss ’25, Brice Wahe ’25), Jacobsen and Damari Lacy ’26 qualified in the long jump and Kendall Woodson ’24 qualified in the shot put.
