Girls track and field roundup

After moving several meets due to cold weather, the West High girls track team ran their first outdoor meet on March 28.

After moving the only girls’ track home meet from March 26 to March 28, the West High girls’ track and field team competed against Linn Mar and Cedar Falls in the Women of Troy relays. While the meet did not calculate team scores, the varsity team had a total of 19 top-three finishes, and the junior varsity team had seven top-three finishes.

On March 30, they traveled to Kingston Stadium to compete in the J-Hawk Relays. Overall, the varsity team placed sixth with 63 points. Most notably, West placed second in the 800-meter dash (Kate Van Waning’ 26), second in the 4×100-meter shuttle hurdle relay (Erinn Varga ’24, Jaylin Herring ’26, Lily McConnell ’25 and Eriniah Carter’ 24), first and second in the 400-meter hurdles (Herring and Varga) and third in the shot put (Helen Penning’ 24).

While the girls’ track meet at Williamsburg on April 2 was postponed until April 15, the girls traveled nearby to Clear Creek Amana on April 6. West High placed fifth overall in the girls’ varsity team scores. The girls track team posted their first Blue Standard that day with the shuttle hurdle relay team, composed of Varga, Herring, Carter and Sophia Olivio ’25. They breezed past the qualifying time 1:07.00 for the Drake Relays by running a time of 1:06.68. The varsity team also won third in the long jump (Eva Willis’ 26), third in the shot put (Penning), first in the 100-meter hurdles (Olivio), first and second in the 400-meter hurdles (Varga and Herring) and second in the 4×400 meter relay (Sophia Austin ’27, Willis, Varga and Herring).

The girls’ track and field team will compete at Mount Mercy University, Urbandale and West High in the Eastern Iowa Track Festival from April 8 to April 14.
