West Side Story staffers won 22 awards in the Iowa High School Press Association’s writing, design and photography contest.
The newspaper staff received three first place awards:
- Eleanor Ho ’17, Megumi Kitamoto ’15 and Michael Moonjely ’17 received first place in-depth news story for “A sense of security.”
- Akash Borde ’15 and Shanthi Chackalackal ’17 received first place news story for “A deficiency in proficiency.”
- Paige Brazina ’16 received first place photo story for “Coming together.”
The newspaper staff received five second place awards:
- Kai Gui ’15 received second place web design for the West Side Story student media website, wsspaper.com.
- Braedyn Dochterman ’17 received second place illustration for “Horizontal.”
- Madie Miller ’15 and Chanel Vidal ’17 received second place photo story for “My favorite place in Iowa City.”
- Aaron Carter ’16 and Leola Eko ’15 received second place sports story for “Join the club (you might have to).”
- Eugenia Chen ’17 and Cameron Cook ’17 received second place video story for “West High devours: homemade vs. store bought.”
The newspaper staff received three third place awards:
- Madie Miller ’15 received third place newsmagazine cover for “A deficiency in proficiency.”
- Katie Peplow ’15 received third place two page design for “No excuses.”
- Layla Hannaford ’17 receive third place video story for “West Side Story quizzes teachers on teen lingo.”
The newspaper staff received three fourth place awards:
- Nick Deerberg ’16, Brittani Langland ’15 and Avery Smith ’16 received fourth place digital media story for “13 movies to watch on Friday the 13th.”
- Lushia Anson ’15 and Madie Miller ’15 received fourth place feature story for “Hashtag activism.”
- Danetta Dobre ’17 and Isabelle Robles ’17 received fourth place in-depth news story for “No excuses.”
The newspaper staff received three fifth place awards:
- Brittani Langland ’15 and Mary Mondanaro ’17 received fifth place digital media story for “Rising star: Nelson Brands.”
- Kelsey Keranen ’16 received fifth place feature story for “The threat on campus.”
- Barbara Badivonac ’16 and Allie Biscupski ’17 received fifth place video story for “West High Weekly: March 10-13.”
The newspaper staff received five awards of excellence:
- Allie Biscupski ’16 and Brittani Langland ’15 received an award of excellence for both digital media story and in-depth news story for “Ferguson to Iowa City.”
- Jaycie Weathers ’15 received an award of excellence for her infographic “A deficiency in proficiency” and her staff editorial “Wake me up when September begins.”
