West Side Story staff wins 22 writing, design and photo awards from IHSPA


West Side Story staffers won 22 awards in the Iowa High School Press Association’s writing, design and photography contest.

The newspaper staff received three first place awards:

  • Eleanor Ho ’17Megumi Kitamoto ’15 and Michael Moonjely ’17 received first place in-depth news story for “A sense of security.”
  • Akash Borde ’15 and Shanthi Chackalackal ’17 received first place news story for “A deficiency in proficiency.”
  • Paige Brazina ’16 received first place photo story for “Coming together.”

The newspaper staff received five second place awards:

  • Nick Deerberg ’16, Brittani Langland ’15 and Avery Smith ’16 received fourth place digital media story for “13 movies to watch on Friday the 13th.”
  • Lushia Anson ’15 and Madie Miller ’15 received fourth place feature story for “Hashtag activism.”
  • Danetta Dobre ’17 and Isabelle Robles ’17 received fourth place in-depth news story for “No excuses.”
