NSPA names West journalists as top 10 finalists in national contests

National finalists include: Alaina Greenlee ’23, Erinn Varga ’24, Reem Kirja ’25, Helena Wa Kalala ’23, Giann Liu ’25, Rosemary Timmer-Hackert ’23, Jessie Li ’25, Laney Prelle ’23, Nicole Lee ’24, Marie Stier ’25 and Ella De Young ’23.

The National Scholastic Press Association announced finalists for its 2023 individual contests, with each contest category including up to 10 finalists nationwide. Winners will be announced at NSPA/JEA’s convention in Boston on Nov. 4.

The finalists from West include:

  1. Portfolio of the Year — Broadcast Journalist of the Year finalist: Alaina Greenlee ’23
  2. Portfolio of the Year — Designer of the Year finalist:  Erinn Varga ’24
  3. Multimedia Feature Story — Reem Kirja ’25, Gianna Liu ’25 and Rosemary Timmer-Hackert ’23 for Destination West
  4. Multimedia Feature Story — Ella De Young ’23, Alaina Greenlee ’23, Jessie Li ’25 and Laney Prelle ’23 for A lifetime of discovery
  5. Interactive Graphic — Nicole Lee ’24 for Which character from “Clue” are you?
  6. Fred Ross Systemic Change Journalism Competition — Ella De Young ’23 and Marie Stier ’25 for Next meal
  7. Social Media Promotion — Helena Wa Kalala ’23 and WSS Staff for social media coverage
  8. Newsmagazine Page/Spread — Erinn Varga ’23 for Art-ificial Art
