NSPA names a record-breaking number of WSS staffers as finalists in national contest
13 students and the 2019-2020 WSS staff are finalists in national journalism contests

National Scholastic Press Association announced finalists for its 2020 individual contests, with each contest category including up to 10 finalists nationwide. Winners will be announced at NSPA/JEA’s national convention Nov. 19-21. The West Side Story students recognized include:
- Photojournalist of the Year: Owen Aanestad ’22
- Digital Story of the Year — Multimedia News: Alex Carlon ’21 and Joe Goodman ’20 for Fighting for change: Examining the combative culture at West High
- Digital Story of the Year — Multimedia Feature: Bess Frerichs ’21 for Emmie Boylan: Living with spina bifida
- Digital Story of the Year — Multimedia Sports: Joe Goodman ’20 and Natalie Katz ’20 for Beneath the jersey: The 20-year history of sports uniforms at West
- Digital Story of the Year — Blog: Sumner Wallace ’20 for Sincerely, Sumner: Crying is cool
- Social Justice Reporting of the Year: Alice Meng ’21 and Jenna Wang ’20 for Disconnected
- Photo of the Year — Environmental Portrait: Caroline Barker ’22 for a portrait of Advika Shah ’22
- Photo of the Year — Environmental Portrait: Paras Bassuk ’21 for a portrait of Chris Kim ’20
