On Tuesday, Oct. 3, girls swimming and diving headed down to the Coralville Recreation Center and hosted their last home meet of the season. It was a dual meet, with West competing against Kennedy High School. Along with the meet, the girls also hosted their senior night. Celebrating six seniors from the West: Karen Liu, Aime Varga, Helen Orszula, Olivia Baylon, Aime Zerwic and Helen Cui.
Although West experienced some complications with events getting disqualified, they still managed to win, with Hannah Geng ’27 placing second in the 200-yard freestyle and Karen Liu ’24 placing first in the 100-yard butterfly freestyle. In the 100-yard backstroke, Emelia Grueter ’26 placed third. For the one-meter dive, Aimee Varga ’24 placed third. In the 50-yard freestyle, Hannah Geng placed first. For the 500-yard freestyle, Emelia Grueter ’26 placed first, and Megan O’Neill ’25 second. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, West placed first with Kolby Reese ’24, Bella Friessen ’25, Hannah Geng ’27 and Karen Liu ’24 leading the win. In the 100-yard backstroke, Megan O’Neil ’25 placed third. Lastly, in the 400-yard freestyle relay, West came in second with Bella Friessen ’25, Averie Bilskemper ’25, Berkley Dismang ’27 and Hannah Geng ’27.
Make sure to go support the girls in their next meet against Dubuque Hempstead on Oct. 10 at the Stephen Hempstead High School-DCSD Aquatics Center.
