On April 6, 31 members of West’s Science Olympiad traveled to Iowa State University to compete in the state Science Olympiad competition, alongside 12 Northwest Junior High students.

The state competition featured 23 science, engineering and math events. Seven pairs of students placed in the top three across both West’s varsity Gold team and Blue team, with the Gold team placing sixth overall. Additionally, Northwest received five medals in the Division B middle school category.

Among the West competitors is Derek Hua ’25, who has been involved in Science Olympiad since his freshman year. Hua prepared most intensively for the Anatomy and Physiology event, placing third alongside Michael Lee ’24.

“Preparation was fairly busy because I was in competitive events like Anatomy and Physiology,” Hua said. “[In the future], I’m going to have to study a little more and take a few more practice tests — just more preparation.”

With several teams successfully placing at state, West plans to continue its Science Olympiad legacy in the years to come. Additionally, three new captains will soon be selected to lead the team for the upcoming school year. Contact [email protected] or [email protected] for more information.
