Both the girls and boys soccer teams headed to the Iowa Hawkeye Soccer Complex on April 24 to face off against their crosstown rivals, City High. The girls kicked off the doubleheader at 5:00 p.m., with the boys following at 6:45.

Last season, the girls fell to City High during a penalty shootout after being tied in the second half. This year, however, the girls were looking to take home the win as they entered the match with a 4-2-1 record, while City stood at 1-4-2. Adding to their momentum, West’s junior varsity girls had just secured a 5-1 victory the day before, giving the varsity a boost of confidence as they stepped onto the pitch.

Within the first five minutes, freshman Sofia Fuentes found the back of the net to give West a 1-0 lead. Shortly after, Alex Held ’26 fired a shot on goal, but City High’s keeper came up with the save.

The Trojans continued to press, and Amaia Martinez ’27 extended the lead after taking a free kick and placing her shot right in the net. Her older sister, Paz Martinez ’25, closed out the half with a third goal, giving West a dominating 3-0 advantage heading into halftime.

West maintained control throughout the second half, dominating possession and limiting City High’s opportunities. Lauryn Hynek ’26 had a strong shot on goal early in the half, but it was stopped by City’s keeper. About 20 minutes in, senior Sophia Oulman delivered an assist to Taleen Rahal ’27, who slotted in West’s fourth and final goal of the night. West secured a 4-0 shutout victory over City High.

Boys soccer

Although City High entered the match with a stronger record, West was determined to extend its winning streak in the cross-town rivalry, a streak that had remained unbroken since 2011. Spirits were high after the junior varsity boys secured a dominant 6-0 win earlier in the evening, followed by a strong showing from the varsity girls. With momentum on their side, West took the field ready to make a statement.

West wasted no time getting on the board, as Daniel Fuentes ’25 opened the scoring with an early goal that gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead and set the tone for the match. Near the end of the first half, Mohamed Eltayeb ’28, an exchange student from Dubai, added to the lead with a well-placed shot, sending West into halftime up 2-0.

The Trojans continued their offensive pressure into the second half, quickly adding to their lead. Defender Christian Kim ’25 found the back of the net for his first goal of the season, extending the advantage to 3-0. Elias Ortiz ’27 followed up with another goal for the Trojans, putting them ahead 4-0 with 20 minutes left in the half.

The game was far from over. With about 20 minutes remaining, City High mounted a fierce comeback, scoring three goals in quick succession and cutting West’s lead to just one. The momentum shift forced the Trojans to lock in defensively and put in extra work to hold their ground. Despite the late pressure, West held on to secure a 4-3 win and extend its rivalry streak over City High.
