May 13 was senior night for the Trojan boys soccer team, with 12 seniors on the varsity team being recognized at the beginning of the game. Among them were captains Caden Crabtree, Daniel Fuentes, Christian Kim and Liam Teghanemt.
It was a slow start for the Trojans, with Dubuque Senior scoring the first goal of the night. For the entirety of the first half, the Trojan boys would not score a goal. It looked grim for West, but halftime turned things around.
After a relatively slow first half, the Trojan boys came back with a vengeance, racking up a whopping 5 goals in the second half.
Teghanemt scored the first goal of the night for West High.
“It was good to get a goal on senior night,” Teghanemt said. “I had to start us off and set the tempo for the future goals.”
Among the other goal scorers were Elias Ortiz ’27, Nick Zhang ’25 and Caleb Hynek ’27. Ortiz scored two, while Zhang and Hynek each scored one.
For Hynek, it was a special game, not only because many of the seniors who mentored him were being recognized, but also because it marked his first goal with West High soccer.
“When I scored, I thought about all the seniors that helped me throughout the years and I dedicate that to them,” Hynek said.
The Trojans ultimately came out on top, winning decisively 5-2. The Trojans’ next game will be on Friday, May 16 against Cedar Rapids Kennedy at the Mount Mercy Athletic Complex.
