The National Scholastic Press Association presented Best of Show awards at the Fall National High School Journalism Convention awards ceremony, Nov. 9 in Philadelphia. Wsspaper.com received second place website for schools with a student population <1800. Ashlyn Brady ’25 is the online editor-in-chief.
NSPA also announced winners for its 2024 individual contests. Josie Schwartz ’25 received second place in the Fred Ross Systemic Change contest, which comes with a $750 cash prize, for Puzzle Pieces: Iowa City’s generational movement to preserve the prairies. Schwartz also received honorable mention in the Feature Photo contest for Prom.
Gianna Liu ’25 and Zoe Smith ’24 received third place Photo Slideshow for West High’s first homecoming parade. Liu also received fifth place podcast for Tech talk: let’s chat: GPT and honorable mention Photojournalist of the Year. Liu, Anna Song ’25 and Celia Sadewasser ’26 received honorable mention for The CC effect. Song also received honorable mention Newsmagazine Cover Design for Women of West.
Erinn Varga ’24 received fourth place Informational Graphic Design for E-pass explained.
The West Side Story staff received honorable mention for Social Media Promotion. Reem Kirja ’25 and Jane Lam ’24 received honorable mention in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Reporting for Sudan’s struggle.
More than 3,500 scholastic journalists, advisers, speakers and exhibitors attended the conference, sponsored by the Journalism Education Association and NSPA.
