As the ground begins to freeze and days get darker and darker earlier at night, the West High athletic teams finished out a terrific fall season, complete with MVC championships and state meet births.
Results:
Boys golf: The team made it to their first state meet in more than 10 years, earning a second-place finish in the district competition. Dillon Croco ’24 led the team with an 18-hole average of 77.25.
Girls swimming and diving: The swim team capped off another stellar season, going undefeated in dual meets. Though under new coaching, the team defended their MVC championship and placed sixth in the state meet Nov. 10 and 11. Diver Aimee Varga ’24 and swimmers Karen Liu ’24 and Hannah Geng ’27 led the West High cohort on the Trojan Bolt team.
Girls cross country: The team gradually improved as their initial ranking of No. 20 improved to No. 15 in the state by the end of the season. Kate Van Waning ’26, Susanna Olsen ’27 and Kalli Titus ’25 made it to the state meet individually. Van Waning also earned first-team all-conference honors, and Olsen received an honorable mention.
Boys cross country: New this year, the top five individuals who weren’t in the top three teams in the state qualifying meet got to go to state. All five of those runners happened to be West High athletes, so they were scored as a team at the state meet. Moustafa Tiea ’25, Brice Wahe ’25, Michael Lee ’24, Cade Bensen ’24 and Sam Showers ’25 qualified for the meet.
Football: The team showed offensive power in wins over Liberty, Muscatine, Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Cedar Rapids Washington but couldn’t get enough points in the Battle of the Boot, falling to City 23-8. The Trojans finished with a 4-5 record.
Volleyball: Division I commits Emma Stammeyer ’24 and Melae’ Lacy ’24 led the Trojans but couldn’t provide enough as they fell to 8-25 over the season.
