Shuttle hurdle relay team sets all-time Iowa record

West’s shuttle hurdle relay team of Smock, Ibrahim, Towler and Gorsh that won the final in 55.82 seconds set an all-time Iowa record.

Their preliminary time of 56.25 this morning improved the West school record and set them at #3 all-time in the state.

West’s shuttle hurdle relay team Drake champions, sets more records

West has won the boys shuttle hurdle relay event with a time of 55.82. The quartet of Smock, Ibrahim, Towler and Gorsh beat the Drake record they previously set this morning by 0.43 seconds, along with further improving the school record.

The boys discus throw event has concluded. Iowa football commit and West thrower Colin Whitters ’26 finished in eighth place with a best throw of 166’06.

Boys 4x100m relay finishes 31st in preliminaries

All 12 heats of the boys 4x100m relay preliminaries have ended. West’s team of Bernoli Luvandu ’27, Neil James ’27, Kellen Craig ’26 and Abdul Hodge ’27 finished in 31st with a time of 43.26 seconds. The top eight teams, led by Dowling Catholic, will advance to the finals later this afternoon.

Girls 4x100m relay places 33rd in preliminaries

The girls 4x100m relay preliminaries have ended. West’s quartet of Amara MacLagan ’28, Savannah Graham ’28, Evelyn Cornish ’27 and Myriam Rahmouni ’29 finished in 33rd place with a time of 49.99 seconds. The top eight teams will advance to the finals later today.

West sets Drake Relays record in shuttle hurdle relay preliminaries, #3 all-time

The preliminary heats of the boys shuttle hurdle relay have ended. West’s squad of Ely Smock ’26, Waleed Ibrahim ’26, Cade Towler ’27 and Ryder Gorsh ’26 won overall with a time of 56.25 seconds, setting a school record, Drake Relays record and the #3 of all-time in the state.

The finals are scheduled for 12:10 p.m.

Day 2 of Drake Relays conclude

All high school events have concluded for the second day of high school competition at the Drake Relays. West competed across multiple events today, with notable results including James Barnett’s fourth place finish in shotput, Ely Smock’s podium finish in the 110m hurdles and the girls sprint medley school-record setting team finishing in 14th.

West will compete in both the boys shuttle hurdle and 4x100m relays tomorrow. The preliminary round of the boys shuttle hurdle relay will include four heats, with the first heat scheduled to start at 8:25 a.m. The Trojans will compete in the third heat. Ely Smock ’26, Waleed Ibrahim ’26, Cade Towler ’27 and Ryder Gorsh ’26 make up the team for West. 

The preliminary round of the 4x100m relay, which will include 12 heats, is slated to begin at 10:12 a.m. The Trojan’s team of Bernoli Luvuandu ’27, Neil James ’27, Kellen Craig ’26 and Abdul Hodge ’27 will compete in the second heat. Live updates will continue to be available here tomorrow.

Boys 4x400m relay concludes

All three heats of the boys 4x400m relay has concluded. West was seeded in lane 5 of heat 1, but did not finish the race. The top eight teams, led by Bettendorf, will advance to the finals taking place tomorrow, April 25.

Girls 4x400m relay places 20th in preliminaries

The preliminary round of the girls 4x400m relay has ended. The team of Bea Ahern ’28, Jena Frank ’26, Sophia Austen ’27 and Savannah Mathias ’28 finished in 20th place with a time of 3:59.87. The top eight teams advanced to the final round held tomorrow, April 25.

Dara Olaleye ’27 places 14th in 800m run

The boys open 800m run has concluded. West’s Dara Olaleye ’27 placed 14th, running a 1:56.28. Cedar Fall’s Brennan Hoyer won the race with a time of 1:51.94. Earlier in the day, Olaleye raced in the distance medley relay, where West placed ninth.

Girls 4x200m relay places 18th

All three heats of the girls 4x200m relay have concluded. West’s squad of Myriam Rahmouni ’29, Evelyn Cornish ’27, Amara MacLagan ’28 and Savannah Mathias ’28 finished seventh in their heat, and 18th overall with a time of 1:44.42.

West’s 4×400 relays scheduled to compete this evening

The 4x400m relays are scheduled to end high school competition tonight, with West scheduled to compete in both the first round of the boys and girls races. The girls 4x400m relay is scheduled to begin at 8:49 p.m., with West’s quartet of Bea Ahern ’28, Jena Frank ’26, Sophia Austen ’27 and Savannah Mathias ’28 scheduled for heat 1.

West’s boys 4x400m team of Cael Dunham ’28, Aiden Nelson ’27, Atari Brown ’28 and Dara Olaleye ’27 are positioned to compete in heat 1 of the race scheduled to begin at 9:06 p.m.

West’s distance medley relay finishes in ninth

The boys distance medley relay has concluded. The quartet of Neil James ’27, Aiden Nelson ’27, Cael Dunham ’28 and Dara Olaleye ’27 finished in ninth place with a time of 3:30.88. The team competed in heat 1 of 3, finishing in second in their heat behind Gilbert High School. Western Dubuque, anchored by Oregon-commit Quentin Nauman ’26, won overall, finishing with a time of 3:26.84.

Ely Smock ’26 places third in 110m hurdle final

The boys 110m hurdles final has ended. Ely Smock ’26, the only West runner to advance to the finals, finished in third place with a time of 14.23 seconds, 0.01 seconds off the school record. Smock will return to the Blue Oval tomorrow to compete with teammates Ryder Gorsh ’26, Waleed Ibrahim ’26 and Cade Towler ’27 in the shuttle hurdle relay. That event is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. Saturday, April 25.

Thrower James Barnett ’28 finishes fourth in shotput

Boys shotput finals have ended. James Barnett ’28 placed in fourth place with a throw of 56’01.50. 24 Iowa high schoolers competed in the event, with Greyson Hartman of Washington winning with a throw of 65’00.50.

Bernoli Luvandu ’27 and Neil James ’27 place in top-15 in long jump

Boys long jump began at 8:30 a.m. Friday with 24 athletes across 22 Iowa high schools. Bernoli Luvandu ’27 and Neil James ’27 both competed for West, with Luvandu finishing in 12th with a best jump of 20’9, and James finishing in 13th with a jump of 20’07.50. Norwalk’s Kaiden Kunze won the event with a jump of 23’08.25.

Day 2 of the Drake Relays kicks off, Ely Smock ’26 advances to 110m high hurdles final

Day 2 of the Drake Relays has officially began, with multiple West athletes set to compete today. Ryder Gorsh ’26, Waleeed Ibrahim ’26 and Ely Smock ’26 competed in the boys 110m high hurdles preliminary heats to start the morning. Smock was the only one to advance, placing in eighth with a time of 14.30 seconds. Gorsh placed ninth in a time of 14.32 seconds, and Ibrahim placed 12th with at time of 14.52 seconds.
