The Golden Globes held their 83rd annual award show on January 11th. This year’s theme was “Old Hollywood Glamour.” Celebrities were supposed to wear luxurious and dramatic pieces to encapsulate the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Teyana Taylor
An outfit from the Golden Globes that was highly praised was Teyana Taylor’s Schiaparelli haute couture dress. The dress was made out of black satin fabric with draping along the bodice. On the back of the dress, there’s a cutout at the lower back with a bejeweled bow filling the space.
On a scale of 10, I’d give the outfit a six. The bodice of the dress has a cool shape and beautiful draping, giving it a unique look. The skirt also drapes along the left side, adding more dimension.
But the outfit didn’t follow the theme, and for a celebrity award show, the dress is far too simple, giving more prom dress than couture.
Jennifer Lawrence
Another look that was often talked about was Jennifer Lawrence’s. Lawrence wore a Givenchy by Sarah Burton dress and a Swarovski necklace. Her dress was a mesh base with an embroidered floral pattern, and she wore a light yellow satin bolero with the same embroidered pattern.
I’d rate the outfit a five out of 10. The floral pattern stood out since most attendees wore satin and dark, solid colors. Lawrence’s makeup also looked great; the smoky eye and muted, cool-toned red lipstick looked simple but elegant with her outfit.
But what brought the look down was the dress; the floral patterns’ placement looked bad, making it look like a bodysuit with mesh rather than a coherent dress. Having the mesh as the base didn’t look great either; the light yellow satin the bolero had would’ve looked much better and would’ve followed the theme.
Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande wore a Vivian Westwood couture dress. The dress was a black, off-the-shoulder ballgown. To pair with the ball gown, Grande wore her hair up in a ponytail with simple makeup and a small necklace from Swarovski.
Overall, I rate the outfit a seven out of 10. The dress had many details, including the bow on Grande’s right arm and the asymmetrical off-the-shoulder neckline. The dress was made of black raffia organza, giving a cool pattern under the light.
The thing that brought down the dress was the simple bodice and the ballgown’s shape. The way it was pleated created weird lumps at the top of the ballgown.
Hudson Williams
Rising star Hudson Williams wore Giorgio Armani to the Golden Globes. He wore a white silk shirt, a matching suit jacket and black pants, pairing the outfit with some gold Bvlgari jewelry.
Out of 10, the outfit is a seven. Though the outfit is quite simple, it has details to elevate it. Williams styled his shirt unbuttoned to create a draping effect. To add more detail, Williams’ outfit included a grosgrain trim around his waist; the trim is a ribbed fabric usually made of silk and rayon. What also stood out was Williams’s statement necklace. Williams wore the golden Bvlgari serpent necklace. Most celebrities wear small, simple necklaces or none at all to award shows.
Although the outfit looked nice, it was still a simple suit with only subtle changes.
Bella Ramsey
Bella Ramsey wore a Prada black suit with a fuchsia bow around their chest.
I’d rate the outfit a five out of 10. The outfit looked good on them, but it was just a simple black suit. I did like the fuchsia bow, especially since it elevated and personalized the look.
Overall, I wish they had changed the look to make it more detailed and original.
Snoop Dogg
Snoop Dogg wore a black satin suit by Talia Coles to the Golden Globes. The black suit had gold buttons and a red stripe on the torso and pants.
Out of 10, I’d rate this a seven. The outfit was on theme but quite simple. I like the details of the red stripe and the golden buttons, and the sunglasses were a nice touch. But overall, the outfit is still simple.
Snoop Dogg has a good personal style; I wish he had made this outfit more individual and less simple.
Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez’s entire outfit was custom Chanel; she wore a black velvet gown with white feathers along the top.
I’d rate the outfit a 10 out of 10. The dress was made to the theme and was executed perfectly. Gomez’s hair and makeup perfectly encapsulate the vintage Hollywood look.
The one thing I wish Gomez had added was a black velvet choker; it would’ve gone perfectly with the outfit and filled the empty space on her neck.
Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez wore a vintage Jean-Louis Scherrer gown. The gown was a mermaid dress with a turtle neck. The fabric was nude mesh with brown lace on the top and the skirt.
I’d rate the outfit a one out of ten. The one positive of her look was that she stayed on theme. But besides that, the dress and makeup looked messy. Lopez’s concealer was too light and her bronzer was too dark. In the photos, her makeup appears poorly blended. The dress wasn’t much better, looking more like an online shopping fail than a haute couture gown. The sheer base made the dress look cheap and sloppy, especially since the nude color didn’t match the foundation she was wearing. The placement of the lace was logical, but it looked bad.
Parker Posey
Parker Posey wore a Rodarte ballgown to the Golden Globes. The ballgown was made of golden silk taffeta with Ruffles along the top and the skirt. Posey paired the ballgown with black sheer gloves and Sabyasachi pearl jewelry.
I’d rate the outfit a 10 out of 10. It follows the theme, perfectly visualizing luxury and dramatics. I love the choice of a golden dress; it was a nice contrast to the dark blues and blacks most of the celebrities wore. The addition of the ruffles also added to the look, giving the dress more dimension than just a corset and ball gown. The black gloves served as a nice contrast to the vibrant gold. The only thing I’d change would be the fabric of the glove. Instead of sheer, I would’ve switched fabric to silk to look more elegant.
Overall, the outfits were beautiful, and many stylists did a good job. In the future, I wish more celebrities would follow the theme and choose more extravagant pieces. Celebrities have access to and opportunities to work with these couture brands to create something beautiful and timeless, yet they’re choosing minimalism and prom-looking clothes instead.
