Every year, West’s Community Inclusion Club hosts a talent show in the spring. This year was especially exciting.
Usually the club raises funds at these talent shows through raffles and donation buckets around the room. The club uses the money from donations to buy things like egg shakers, drums and other musical instruments. These instruments are well loved by students. This year, the club wanted to give back to the community as a thank you for all of the past donations.
This year, instead of asking for donations, the club decided to give back to all of the people who came to the show.
When audience members walked into the talent show leaders handed them a raffle ticket. Later on in the show, they called out raffle numbers to select prizes ranging from t-shirts, umbrellas and more.
The acts performed ranged from singing, dancing and speech. The students were proud and excited to share their talents with the community.
A few West High students joined the club to help these students put on the talent show. Sophomore Thora Schimmel described her involvement at the club.
Schimmel also described the new connections she has made despite a communication barrier that exists between some members.
Following the recent retirement of Steve Merkle, a special education teacher, a new club leader has continued the club. Diane Miller is the new teacher of Community Music who is adapting to the new role of this club’s leader.
