How to make a grilled cheese.

Sandwiches are one of the most popular and easily made foods in the world today. But just what sandwich do people really like the most? That’s what question we set out to answer. We sent out a poll to fellow West High students and these were the results. Grilled cheese was the most popular answer with 37.9%, close behind it was the BLT which garnered 34.5%. The PBJ surprisingly got only 10.3%. Miscellaneous sandwiches made up the other 17%.

Sandwiches are commonly enjoyed by people because of their good taste and ease to make. Anyone with bread and a type of meat or vegetable or really almost anything can make one. Sandwiches were first thought to be invented in England however historians aren’t fully sure. Grilled cheeses were invented in America during the great depression. They were cheap, easy to make, and quite filling, not to mention tasty.

People tend to enjoy their sandwiches in many different ways. “I toast the bread,” Max Stephens, ‘27, said when questioned on ways he spices his sandwiches up. We would continue to ask more West High students on ways they spice up their sandwiches. “Lots of sauce! Mayo, ketchup, mustard, BBQ. Lots of meat too. I’m a huge deli girl,” said Gianna Liu ’25. Sauce was a very common answer, second only to bacon. Derrick Pennell ‘24 replied with “Nutella and strawberry jam”. This interesting combination definitely stood out to us, while most people went the salty route, he went the sweet.

Overall this survey gave us a unique perspective into the food culture and tastes of West High with one of the most simple meals. The sandwich is one of history’s most versatile foods and it clearly has its fans at West.
