Although official events held by the non-profit For the Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology for the 2025 FIRST Robotics Competition season ended with the FIRST Championships on April 16-19, there are still offseason events that teams can compete in. One such event, the second annual Clash in the Corn, was held at Valley Southwoods Freshman High School in West Des Moines on Saturday, Oct. 18.
FRC is an annual competition where two alliances of three teams each compete to score points via completing game objectives on a carpeted field, with the objectives changing every year. The 2025 Reefscape season had robots picking up and placing PVC pipes called coral onto a metal structure called the reef, and picking up and placing large rubber balls called algae onto a net high above the ground.
Iowa City Robotics competed at the Clash in the Corn as Team 167 Children of the Corn and Team 9987 Jank 7, with 167 being their main robot and 9987 being their secondary robot. With 167 placing second in the qualification stage rankings with a 6-3 win-loss record, they were selected to be captains of the second seed alliance in the playoff stage. The alliance members that they selected through a draft were 3928 Neutrino and 3871 Trojan Robotics.
The second seed alliance went entirely undefeated through the double elimination playoffs, sweeping the upper bracket and defeating the first seed alliance 2-0 in the best of three finals.
167 also was awarded the Programming Award for exceptional software on their robot.
