NSPA names West Side Story’s website an Online Pacemaker finalist

Winners to be announced April 18 at NSPA’s Minneapolis convention.

The National Scholastic Press Association named the WSS website, wsspaper.com, an Online Pacemaker winner April 18. The National Scholastic Press Association recognized the nation’s top scholastic news sites by announcing 40 finalists in its 2026 Online Pacemaker competition March 4. West Side Story’s wsspaper.com is one of three Iowa news sites recognized. Devin Kraber ’26 is the WSS online editor-in-chief. NSPA has recognized WSS as an Online Pacemaker finalist six times, most recently in 2022.

While the judges named the Pacemaker finalists, the Pacemaker winners have not been selected. Judges will continue to study the finalist websites and announce winners at the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Minneapolis April 16-18.

NSPA

The NSPA Pacemaker, one of the oldest awards for scholastic journalism, has a rich tradition. The association started presenting the prestigious award to high school newspapers soon after the organization was founded in 1921. Throughout the years, yearbooks, magazines, online sites and broadcast programs were added to the competition.

A separate Newspaper/Newsmagazine Pacemaker competition recognizes print news publications from the previous year each November, and WSS was a finalist for the 2024-2025 print editions.
