The rumors are true, Trader Joe’s will be opening up at the Iowa River Landing in Coralville.

According to Coralville Mayor Pro Tem and social studies teacher Mitch Gross, the California-based grocery store is going to fill a market in the Iowa City area that is currently vacant — affordably priced healthy food.

“I’ve long been a big pusher of getting Trader Joe’s here,” he said. “[Coralville] has such a unique market. We are a community that has an amazing location off I-80, and we have an enriching population that wants to try new things.”

The corridor currently has many different grocery store options to choose from, including other niche grocery stores such as Lucky’s Market and the New Pioneer Food Co-op.

“I personally don’t think the Co-op and Trader Joe’s will be competitors, and I say that as a loyal member of the Co-op,” Gross said.

Gross explained that each grocery store has something unique to offer, and Trader Joe’s will only add to the diversity of food options in the Iowa City area.

According to the announcement made by Trader Joe’s, the 13,000 square foot store is set to open in mid-2017.
