Boys basketball falls in rematch against Xavier

The boys basketball team fell 40-47 in the rematch game against the Saints on Jan. 29.

In the first game back after a two-week shutdown for the boys basketball team, the Trojans struggled to lock into their first game back against Xavier and fell short against the Saints 40-47 on Jan. 29.

Xavier was the first to be up on the scoreboard while Pete Moe ’22 led the Trojans, scoring the first six points of the game to make the score 6-10 at the end of the first quarter. Freshman Savion Taylor hooped in a three-pointer to start off the second quarter, but the team struggled offensively throughout the half, going into halftime 11-20.

In hopes of narrowing the score difference, Steve Bergman’s squad started to pick up their pace. Another three-pointer from Taylor and buckets from Moe put the Trojans up 20-28 with 3:22 left in the third quarter. A 8-0 run from the Trojans put the team closer to the Saints, with the score 26-33 at the end of the third quarter.

A two-pointer from Christian Barnes ’22 got the bench on their feet as the Trojans climbed up 36-39 with 1:46 left in the fourth quarter. The team struggled to keep their momentum when successful free throws and three-pointers lifted the Saints up 38-46. A free throw from Xavier with roughly seven seconds left in the game finalized the score to 40-47.

Bergman’s squad will be right back in West High’s main gym tomorrow morning to face off Burlington for the second time this season.
