The last time the girls tennis team appeared in the state tournament was in 2019.

After a state runner-up finish two years ago, the team is one step closer to seeking revenge.

The girls tennis team hosted the Region 4 regional tournament on May 22. The Trojans won all of their matches against City High and Dubuque Senior to advance to the team state tournament.

Ella DeYoung ’23 won both of her matches 6-0, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1. Zola Gross ’23, Lydia Shin ’23 and Caroline Mascardo ’22 each had a pair of match wins at the tournament.

Because of the rain, the matches were moved indoors at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Jay Mascardo ’23 fought back from a 4-1 deficit to take the first set 7-5 and was up 2-0 in the second set while senior Caroline Chandler’s match win secured the tennis team’s spot at the team state tournament.

Along with the team state tournament, DeYoung will compete in singles and the doubles team of siblings Caroline and Jay will compete at the individual state tournament on June 2.

The Trojans will travel to Bettendorf on Monday to compete in the first round of the team state tournament.
