Digging into the volleyball season

West’s volleyball team season comes to a close. Here’s a quick summary.

The Women of Troy wrapped up their volleyball season with a 6-1 conference record, 16-17 overall. This season was planned to be a rebuilding season, with a whopping 10 seniors graduating last year. Even with the loss of teammates, head coach Keeley Arnold’s team held strong.

The Trojans started their season successfully with their home-opening win against Cedar Rapids Washington (3-1). Another major success of the season for the 2022 Trojans includes winning the Spike versus City (3-2) on Senior Night. This was the first time in three years this happened, ending the streak for the seniors’ for the first time in their high school careers.

The team leaders this season include Alaina Greenlee ’23, Sophia Deyak ’23, Emma Stammeyer ’24 and Melae’ Lacy ’24. Greenlee leads the team in digs (323) and tied with Lacy in serving aces (30). Blocks are led by Deyak, who had a total of 52 total blocks this season. Stammeyer ended her season with 323 assists, the highest on the team. Finally, Lacy capped off the team, leading with a total of 280 kills.

State qualifiers started successfully for West, with a 3-1 win against Waterloo East. In the next round, the Women of Troy closed their 2022 volleyball season by falling to Johnston (0-3) in the State Qualifier Semifinal.

Arnold’s volleyball team said goodbye to seven seniors this year: Alaina Greenlee, Jaida Rost, Lexi Nash, Finley Bevelaqua, Grace Miller, Lily Prochaska and Sophia Deyak, all of which contributed greatly to the success of the team over their high school years.
