No cap recap: winter sports in hindsight

With the closing of the winter sports season, members from both basketball, wrestling, bowling and boys swim team recap their respective seasons on this installment of no-cap recap.

As the ground beings to thaw and spring sports getting ready to take their fields, WSS looks back on the Winter sports and their respective seasons. From the wrestling team’s top finishes at state, to a rebuilding year for other teams, listen below to catch up with West’s boys swim team as well as the basketball, dance and wrestling teams. 

Respective sports results:

Basketball: The girls ended their season at the second third of sub-state, with an overall record of 16-7 for new head coach Mr. Frese. The boys season ended with a record of 12-11, the boys’ season ended in the second round of sub state with a loss to Ankeny Centennial.

Boys’ swim: The team ended 8th at state, with the top finish on the team in the 100m butterfly with Holden Carter ’24 taking home second.

Dance team: The team qualified to the second round at nationals, finishing their season .2 of a point away from finals and top 15 in the nation.

Wrestling: Both the girls and boys team had top ten finishes at state. Jannell Avila ’23 finished 3rd at the first sanctioned girls wrestling state. Alexander Pierce ’26 was a state champion in the 106 weight group. Justin Avila ’25, Kyler Scranton ’24 and Braden Doyle all finished their seasons at state as well.
