A preview of Pride

With Pride Month approaching, here is how Colors Club and other community members are celebrating.

Pride 2023

As Pride Month, June, approaches, people are generating ideas for how they will choose to celebrate. The purpose of Pride Month is to recognize the LGBTQ+ community and celebrate each person’s identity. There are several local events throughout the month meant to celebrate LGBTQ+ pride, with the Iowa City Pride Festival being June 17 from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. Colors Club members William Lin ’26 and Caroline Vander Weg ’26 have their own way of celebrating Pride Month.

“[To celebrate] I’ll keep being gay,” Lin said.

Vander Weg plans to indulge in LGBTQ+ content.

“I think I’m planning on going to local pride events. I also want to watch my favorite queer shows and make pride-themed art,” Vander Weg said.

In addition to individual celebrations, Colors Club will be hosting their last meeting of the year May 31. This meeting will include a meeting with Iowa Senate Minority Leader and West Graduate Zach Wahls ‘09. He will be talking about the recent Iowa LGBTQ legislation that was passed and answering questions from the Colors Club members.
