Coming off a tough road loss to Prairie the West High girls basketball team regrouped and picked up their second official and first home win of the season defeating Western Dubuque 53-40.

Early on the Women of Troy had to work out some early-season kinks consisting of miscommunication turnovers and missed layups. Coach BJ Mayer’s team responded with some aggressive defensive plays from Matayia Tellis ’21 and a baseline trap full-court press to put them up by 10 at the end of the first quarter.

With help from West High’s patient high-low offense and baseline runner, the team kept a comfortable lead through out much of the second half. Tellis, Audrey Koch ’21 and Cora Saunders ’20 combined for 42 of the Trojans’ 53 points on the night. Each player found the bottom of the net from beyond the arc to manage the lead and secure the win. Koch led the team in scoring on the night with 24 points.

The girls’ basketball team is back in action on Friday, Dec. 13 against highly-ranked City High as part of the girls and boys doubleheader.
