New talent emerges in girls first outdoor track and field meet

Annie Schwartz ’23 leads off the 4×400-meter.

The girls track and field team had their first outdoor track and field meet at West March 28. Many new members recorded first and second-place finishes as the team placed second in the meet.

In her first outdoor high school track and field meet, Meena Tate ’23 jumped 5’3.5” in the high jump placing first while Ava Bruxvoort ’25 finished third with a jump of 5’0”. Helen Penning ’24 also contributed to the field event points finishing second and third in the shot put and discus respectively.

West High swept the hurdle events, getting wins in the 100-meter hurdles, shuttle hurdle relay and 400-meter hurdles. Eriniah Carter ’24 won the 100-meter hurdles and contributed to the shuttle hurdle relay that Sophia Olivo ’25 anchored. Erinn Varga ’24 won the 400-meter hurdles while Lily McConnell ’25 finished third.

The Trojans also did well in the distance events, with Cindy Wang ’24 and Kate Van Waning ’25 pulling away wins in the 3,000-meter run and 1,500-meter run. Wang and Lydia Evans ’26 went two and three in the 800-meter run as well.

The distance medley placed first with the team of Lindsey McKane ’23, Autumn Henderson ’25, Anna Prouty ’23 and Van Waning. The night concluded with a close 4×400-meter relay, but Linn-Mar edged out West to win the title.

The girls will compete at the Eastern Iowa Track and Field Festival April 15.
