IHSPA names WSS staff 2026 News Team of the Year finalist for 10th consecutive year

WSS wins 87 individual awards, including Iowa’s Designer of the Year, Photographer of the Year, Writer of the Year, 3 of Iowa’s Top 15 Emerging Journalists

The Iowa High School Press Association announced Taelim Yoon ’26 as Designer of the Year, Colin Wehrle ’27 as Photographer of the Year and Shanza Sami ’26 as Writer of the Year. Yoon is the Trojan Epic Yearbook co-editor-in-chief and design co-editor and a designer for West Side Story’s print edition. Wehrle is photo and sports editor for the WSS print edition and will be co-editor-in-chief for the 2026-2027 school year. Sami is the co-editor-in-chief of the WSS print edition.

IHSPA also named top 15 Emerging Journalists for the state of Iowa, and three of them are West journalists: 

Loren Barjis ’28, Emma Lai ’28 and Zeke Williamson ’27. Winning portfolios are based on the overall quality of their work, the impact on their school and community, the students’ understanding of the fundamentals of journalism, and the level of experimentation. Each winner is offered a $100 scholarship toward the cost of attending the  University of Iowa Summer Journalism Workshops for High School students or the Drake Media Now summer journalism camp.

IHSPA named the WSS staff a 2026 News Team of the Year finalist for the 10th consecutive year. IHSPA determines finalists by choosing the schools with the highest number of individual award winners from its annual writing, photography, design and online contests. The WSS staff won a total of 87 individual awards. IHSPA will announce News Team of the Year winners at its annual state conference in October. Colin is a junior returning for his second year on staff. This year, he’s the photo and sports editor for the print edition. Outside the newsroom, you can find him going on long runs, conducting the marching band or listening to music.

Taelim Yoon is a senior at West High. This is her third year on Trojan Epic Yearbook and she is the Co-Editor-in-Chief and Co-Design Editor. This is also her first year on West Side Story print as a designer. Outside the newsroom, you can find her watching a movie or painting!
