Trojan Bolts dominate in first meet of the season

The Trojan Bolts beat Cedar Rapids Jefferson 127-41, winning all 11 events at the first home meet at the Coralville Rec Center on Nov. 28.

The Varsity 200 medley relay started the first meet off strong. Max Gerke ’24, Winston Fan ’26, Holden Carter ’24 and Ian Caballero ’23 took first place, followed by Matthew Staber ’23, Josh Trent ’25, Sam Ruelas ’24, Christian Janis ’23 in second.

In both the varsity 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM, the Trojan Bolts secured first, second and third-place titles.

Gerke took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:53.33 followed by a second-place finish by Nikolai Paulson ‘26 in 5:30.71.

Carter takes the 100-yard backstroke followed by teammate Fan winning the 100-yard breaststroke.

The team finished the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay consisting of Paulson, Ruelas, Lukas Swanson ‘23, and Gerke. They finished with a time of 3:29.17.

Gerke feels positive about the upcoming season’s potential, “[We] felt pretty good, but most of us can go a lot faster.”

The Trojan Bolts will return on Tuesday for their second dual meet at Cedar Falls.
