When people hear the name Lebron James, his basketball dominance immediately comes to mind. The 6’9” Los Angeles Lakers star has gathered countless records during his 20-year career and is often hailed as one of the greatest players in basketball history. However, James, a four-time NBA championship winner, recently sparked debate for his actions in a different field: international politics.
In October 2023, James tweeted, “The devastation in Israel is tragic and unacceptable. The murder and violence against innocent people by Hamas is terrorism,” in regards to the Israel-Palestine conflict that escalated into war in Gaza earlier that month.
In the tweet, made on a joint account with his business partner Maverick Carter, he added, “The SpringHill Company family sends our deepest condolences to Israel and the Jewish community…we pray for peace in the region and reiterate our continued commitment to fight hate in all its forms.”

James has a history of political activism, which he defended in 2021 when Swedish soccer player Zlatan Ibrahimovic criticized him.
The Associazione Calcio Milan forward and soccer superstar called James out for his frequent advocacy, saying, “Do what you’re good at. Do the category that you do… This is the first mistake famous people do when they become famous and come into a certain status. For me, it is better to avoid certain topics and do what you’re best at doing, because otherwise it doesn’t look good.”
In response, James stood firm.“I would never shut up about things that are wrong,” he said. “I’ll use my platform to continue to shed light on everything that’s going on around this country and around the world. There’s no way I would ever just stick to sports, because I understand how powerful this platform and my voice is.”
But his statement on the divisive Israel-Palestine conflict has rekindled the controversy. Following a destructive attack on Israel by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, Israel has retaliated to a devastating extent.
While support for an Israeli counterattack was relatively high in the first few days, public support has declined as civilian casualties and displacement steadily increase. According to a recent poll by the research firm Gallup, only 32% of Americans now support Israel’s military action in Gaza, a 10-point decrease from Gallup’s September 2024 survey. In Gaza, over 65,000 people are estimated to have died as a result of the conflict.
Many activist groups and aid organizations, including a UN commission, have labeled the war in Gaza as genocide through starvation, and Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu has been labeled a war criminal by the International Criminal Court. Israel has been condemned internationally, and many public figures have campaigned to supply aid to Gaza.
But beyond the Israel-Palestine conflict, James’s controversial statement brings up a broader question — should celebrities use their fame to speak out on political issues? West students had varying opinions on the matter.
To Ben Spinler ’27, celebrities have a duty to use their position for positive change. “If you have a lot of money, then I think it’s your responsibility to help other people that need equality,” Spinler said. “I mean, you have a lot of influence, and I think that you should use that influence for good… It’s totally a lot of eyes on you, so you should try and use that to spread awareness… to do good and use [your] position for good.”
However, Spinler believes there’s a danger in adopting a celebrity’s opinion. “I think there’s definitely gonna be some people out there that see, like, Taylor Swift or whoever’s political opinions and just jump on to that,” Spinler said. “ I think some people think, if LeBron is good at playing basketball, Drake’s good at rapping, then they’re gonna be good at these other things too, they’re gonna be right in other ways… [but] don’t idolize them [or] accept everything they say is true.”
Mason Lemburg ’28 agrees that fame doesn’t guarantee correctness. “People should have the right to speak up, but at the same time, it doesn’t always make people right,” Lemburg said.
“Just because they’re famous doesn’t make them any more correct than any person speaking about a topic. So I don’t think just because some famous person says [something], they should have more merit to their statement than a person who is just an everyday dude,” Lemburg said. “I don’t think being a celebrity should make you more correct.”
Lemburg believes the statement was a hasty decision on Lebron’s part. “I think very early on, he decided that the news… was saying Hamas is killing Israeli citizens.”
“But I think possibly his viewpoint has changed after different things have come out about how Palestine has been having many, many civilian casualties,” Lemburg said. “Someone with his level of influence, and I guess power, should be conscientious of what he says and how quickly he says it, and the amount of research or looking into who he does on certain topics.”
No matter what position someone has on the issue, it’s important to remember that political opinions shouldn’t depend on what a sports star says, no matter how many points they’ve scored. Especially as more celebrities begin to take sides in political issues, it’s important to do the research — political views should be based on more than just scoreboards and highlight reels.
