The results of the New York City mayoral election came as a shock to many. Popular platforms such as Instagram have been flooded with increasingly polarized posts about mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, a Muslim Ugandan-born Democratic Socialist who ran much of his campaign via social media.
His main political opponent, Andrew Cuomo, has frequently claimed that Mamdani was a communist, as well as a supporter of Harakat al-Muqāwama al-Islāmiyya, better known as Hamas. These unfounded claims seem to be based on a concept alien to Cuomo: democratic socialism.
Instagram and TikTok have been filled with clips mocking Cuomo voters and their fears of a “socialist caliphate” in New York City. The conservative social media campaign was filled with prejudiced content deeming him a Hamas supporter and a communist.
But what exactly is Mamdani campaigning for? When introduced to him, many voters were confused as to exactly what he represents. Is he pro-socialism? Is he in support of Islam? While Mamdani’s viral campaign touched many, it also left some unclear about what exactly he was campaigning for.
Mamdani explains his policy goals in his own videos, which feature shocking stunts uncharacteristic of today’s politicians. One of his foremost policies from his campaign was a four-year rent freeze for over a million NYC apartments. To help convince people of the sincerity of his promise, Mamdani joined the annual Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge and leaped into the freezing Atlantic Ocean wearing a full dress suit. After climbing out of the frigid water, Mamdani shivered as he spoke, “I’m freezing… the rent!”
Most of Mamdani’s viral content consists of videos like this that feature stunts related to his proposed policies. His policies revolve around one thing: the unsustainable living costs of a city like NYC. Mamdani plans to alleviate financial burdens on New Yorkers by taxing the rich.
Despite his massive popularity and resounding success within the elections, Mamdani did not receive any official endorsement from Democratic congressmen. Much of this can be attributed to his clear lack of support for Israel, a topic that gained an unevenly high amount of attention within mayoral debates and interviews.
Most speculate that the reason behind the lack of intraparty support for Mamdani can be blamed on the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which has spent millions of dollars on supporting politicians from all parties. AIPAC-funded politicians have been criticized for putting too much favor on the state of Israel, and many have been accused of ignoring the interests of the American people in favor of Israel.
Mamdani has clearly expressed his lack of support for Israel and echoed the branding of Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu as a war criminal by the International Criminal Court. However, his campaign has reassured Jewish New Yorkers as he has conveyed strong support for Jewish residents.
Mamdani is also strongly against the influence of the International Customs Enforcement Agency and their exertion of force in the city. In his victory speech, Mamdani directly attacked the unlawful conduct of ICE in their seizure of NYC residents without due process.
While democratic socialist leaders are not entirely new to the United States, Mamdani’s position as the mayor of NYC is the highest office currently held by a democratic socialist. European countries like Sweden, Germany and Norway are all led by democratic socialists, and these states are among the lowest in income inequality and disease worldwide.
To many people, not only those in New York, Mamdani stands at the forefront of a redefined Democratic Party. Young progressives like him will continue to advance and replace the established Democrats who have stagnated in office.
Zohran Mamdani’s election represents the birth of a new era for not just the Democrats but for the entire political landscape of the United States. His message of hope and an official who works for the people instead of manipulating the masses.
