Girls and boys wrestling compete in their first home dual of the season

The wrestling teams took on the Western Dubuque Bobcats in their first home meet of the season Dec. 7.

Girls fall to Western Dubuque

The girls wrestling team had their first home dual of the season Dec. 7 against Western Dubuque.

Lila Bihun ’27 started off the night at 125. Her opponent got a few takedowns but Bihun battled, earning an escape. However, she got pinned in the third period. Next up was Helen Orszula ’24. It was all tied up after the period after Orszula attempted to throw her opponent to the ground. Orszula got a reversal and penalty point but got pinned as the second period expired.

At 135, Sylvia Broffitt ’26 turned things around. She got an early takedown followed by two reversals. She got the best of her opponent, pinning her with 30 seconds left in the second period.

After Western Dubuque pinned two girls, Trinity Myers ’25 took to the mat. She earned a takedown and a two-point near-fall in the first period. She continued that momentum, pinning her opponent with 1:30 left in the second period.

The Trojans lost 54-30 but will face the Little Hawks at City High Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. for their next meet in the area.

Boys prevail over the Bobcats

The boys beat Western Dubuque after pinning many of their opponents Dec. 7.

The boys got the night started at 138 with Christian Janis ’26. He got three takedowns during the bout, almost pinning his opponent, but winning 6-0. In the 144 weight class, West lost but picked up momentum after Braden Doyle ’24 won by fall with 20 seconds left in the first period.

Justin Avila ’25 picked right back up where Doyle left off, and won by fall in the second period after several takedowns and near-falls. After losses at 165 and 175, Kyler Scranton ’24 picked it back up, securing a pin in the second period.

After two losses and a forfeit, it was time for Charles Barnhouse ’27 in the 106 weight class. Barnhouse got a pin in 30 seconds to shorten the deficit by six points. Sophomore Alex Pierce also got a quick pin in 20 seconds and then it was time for the 128 weight class.

Mathew Tran ’27 scored a number of takedowns and near-falls, leading 15-5 at the end of the second period. Now close to a technical fall, he was able to complete the match with 1:15 left in the third period. Dylan Colleran ’27 took it from there, winning by decision 11-2.

The boys beat Western Dubuque 42-34. They’ll be back home Dec. 14 to take on Linn-Mar at 7 p.m.
